Wynand
(Pronounced: Vey-nuh-nd)
I am a Principal Platform Engineer and Cloud Architect. Originally from South Africa and now an Australian Permanent Resident, I am based in Adelaide, South Australia. I primarily partner with interstate clients to design and scale high-availability cloud environments across the country.
For nearly two decades, I have been building and rebuilding systems—from on-premise infrastructure to large-scale cloud platforms on AWS and GCP. My work sits at the intersection of platform engineering and scalable system design, where reliability and simplicity are as important as performance.
What I Do
I design and build production-grade platforms that enable engineering teams to move fast without sacrificing security or stability.
Core Expertise:
- Cloud Architecture: Designing robust systems across AWS and GCP.
- Internal Platforms: Building developer tooling and “Golden Paths.”
- Production Readiness: Implementing GitOps, CI/CD, and Zero Trust patterns.
- Reliability: Solving complex performance bottlenecks under real-world constraints.
Certifications
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional
- Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect
Background & Philosophy
My career began with hands-on infrastructure management—VMware, Hyper-V, and production servers. This experience shaped my approach to engineering:
If it is painful, automate it. If it is fragile, redesign it.
I focus on clarity, efficiency, and leverage. I believe systems should be understandable, and that the best solutions scale the impact of the people using them, not just the systems themselves.
Outside of Work
I am a hands-on builder by nature. When I am not architecting cloud systems, I spend my time on:
- Homelab: Experimenting with Proxmox, Talos Linux, and network orchestration.
- Field Archery: A recently adopted pursuit that balances the technical nature of my work with physical discipline.
- Crafting: Making my own biltong—a nod to my South African heritage and a lesson in patience and process.
- Family: Engaging in technical projects with my kids to spark their curiosity about how things work.
